Description
McNary Dam is a 1.4 mile long hydroelectric dam that spans the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington, 292 miles upriver from its mouth at Astoria, Oregon. It is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam provides slack water navigation, hydroelectric power generation, recreation, wildlife habitat, and incidental irrigation. Completed in 1954, the dam's generation capacity is 980 megawatts. It has two fish ladders for steelhead and salmon, and a navigation lock 86 ft. wide, 683 ft. long that lifts boats an average 75 ft.
