Artist's Description

The astrolabe, among the oldest of scientific devices, measures the angular distance of stars above the horizon. Arabs and Persians of the 9th through 11th centuries developed the astrolabe into an object of great beauty. Using an astrolabe, at right, a medieval monk observes the positions of stars, while an assistant records the readings.
