A 3D illustration of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, a "SARS-like" virus that produces symptoms similar to the common cold, with patients also developing shortness of breath or sever acute respiratory illness. In May 2013, a number of infections were reported in Saudi Arabia, with cases emerging in Jordan, Qatar, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, France and the UK. Between April 2012 and May 2013, at least 50 cases had been reported, with 30 deaths. The first reported cases of MERS-CoV in the U.S. appeared in April and May of 2014.
