The mesopelagic copepod, Gaussia princeps, is commonly refereed to as the Black Prince Copepod. They are bioluminescent. They can be found at depths exceeding 1000m (3000 feet). Adults migrate daily from deep waters to shallower waters at night to feed. This species is much larger than most copepods. The hypothesis that suggests that deep water life forms may sometimes get much larger than their shallow water counterparts is called "abyssal gigantism". This specimen was trawled from between the surface and 1000 feet depth off of Monterey, California, in November 2009.
