Description
Mesopelagic crustaceans are common in midwater trawls in the Gulf of Mexico. This is Janicella spinicauda trawled from between 200 and 600 meters depth, Gulf of Mexico, 2016. This species can eject a cloud of bioluminescent fluid to distract predators when it tries to escape. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project.
