Description
Metal reactivity. Three metals are placed in test tubes with 1 M solutions of hydrochloric acid at room temperature magnesium (left), zinc (center), and copper (right). Magnesium reacts more vigorously than zinc, both producing hydrogen bubbles Mg + HCl -> MgCl2 + H2, Zn + HCl -> ZnCl2 + H2. This is an example of a single displacement reaction. Copper does not react with hydrochloric acid.
