Description
This milk crate, normally used to hold samples, was placed under a "black smoker" or a jet of super heated sea water that quickly melted the plastic. The submarine in question is Pisces IV, a three-person, battery-powered submersible with a maximum operating depth of 2000 meters (6,280 feet). This vehicle allows scientists to observe the deep sea through multiple ports, video records, instrument placement, and sample collecting. This sub is maintained by the University of Hawaii.
