Artist's Description

Labyrinth from the Liber floridus of Lamberto Satin Omer, 12th century. In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man. Minos prayed to Poseidon to send him a white bull and promised to sacrifice the bull as an offering, to prove his subservience. A beautiful white bull rose from the sea, but when Minos saw it, he decided to it and sacrificed another instead. When Poseidon learned about the deceit, he made Pasipha, Minos' wife, fall madly in love with the bull. She had Daedalus make a wooden cow, climbed into the decoy and fooled the white bull. The offspring of their lovemaking was the Minotaur. He was captured and locked in tan elaborate labyrinth. He was offered a regular sacrifice of youths and maids to satisfy his cannibalistic hunger. He was eventually destroyed by the hero Theseus.
