Artist's Description

Molecular model of saxitoxin viewed from two opposite directions. It's molecular formula is C10 H17 N7 O4, and molecular mass is 299.29 g/mol. Saxitoxin (STX) is a neurotoxin naturally produced by some species of marine dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. Ingestion of saxitoxin (usually through shellfish contaminated with toxic algal blooms) is responsible for the human illness known as paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). It is one of the most potent natural toxins known. The medical and ecological importance of saxitoxin lies mainly in it's effects of harmful algal blooms on shellfish and certain fin fish which can concentrate the toxin, making it available both for human consumption as well as by various marine organisms. STX has been found in at least 12 marine puffer fish species in Asia and one freshwater fish tilapia in Brazil. Color Key for the model shown here Carbon- gray, Hydrogen- cyan, Nitrogen- blue, Oxygen- red.
