Description
Skatole molecular models. Carbon gray; Hydrogen cyan; Nitrogen blue. Skatole or 3-methylindole occurs naturally in feces and has a strong fecal odor. It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan in the mammalian digestive tract. In low concentrations it has a flowery smell and is found in several flowers and essential oils, such as orange blossoms or jasmine. Its name is derived from the Greek root "skato-" meaning "dung." Molecular formula C9 H9 N. Molar mass 131.172 g/mol. The 7 rotational variations make it possible to model of a cloud of foul fecal odor.
