Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Morpho butterfly scale, broken transversely to show nanostructuring. The characteristic iridescence of the Morpho's wings is due to the microstructure of the wing scales. The strips perpendicular to the surface of the scale have transverse webs which amplify certain wavelengths of light by interference. Morpho butterflies are used in bionics research, which attempts to reproduce this structure. Magnification is 20,000x at 12x15cm image size.
