Description
Colored scanning electron micrograph of spore capsules (sporangium) of Cord Moss (Funaria hygrometrica). The sporangium are amount spiraling stalks which curl up in dry conditions and unwind when they are damp. The small spherical structures are the spores which are flung away from the plant as the fringe of teeth (peristome) around the mouth of the capsule opens. Funaria hygrometrica is found worldwide and is very common especially on ground where there has been a fire. Magnification is x12 at 6x7cm or x20 at 4x5".
