Artist's Description

Sunset across the Ryogoku bridge from the bank of the Sumida River at Onmayagashi is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. The tweflth print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Shows a man poling a ferry boat full of passengers across the Sumida River, with view of the Ryogoku Bridge. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems. Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located near the Pacific coast of Honshu and one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries.
