Edward drinks from a cup of mead given by Aelfthryth, widow of the late Edgar, unaware (?) that her attendant is about to murder him. Edward the Martyr (962 - March 18, 978) was a King of England (975-978). Edward was the eldest son of Edgar the Peaceful but was not his acknowledged heir. On Edgar's death, the leadership of England was contested, with some supporting Edward and others his younger half-brother Aethelred the Unready. Edward was chosen and crowned by his clerical supporters, the archbishops Dunstan of Canterbury and Oswald of Worcester. Edward's reign was brought to an end by his murder at Corfe Castle in 978 in circumstances that are not altogether clear. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
