Artist's Description

On December 29, 1170, the knights Reginald FitzUrse, Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy and Richard le Breton arrived at Canterbury. The knights informed Becket he was to go to Winchester to give an account of his actions, but Becket refused. The knights retrieved their weapons and found Becket in a spot near a door to the monastic cloister, where the monks were chanting vespers. One knight grabbed him and tried to pull him outside, but Becket grabbed onto a pillar and bowed his head to make peace with God, and the lowly knights hacked him to death. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
