Description
Illustration of Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 - November 11, 1831), an enslaved African-American who led a two-day rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Virginia in August of 1831. The rebellion was suppressed within days; Turner survived in hiding until his capture by Benjamin Phipps, a farmer, on October 30, 1831. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death by hanging. This image has been colorized.
