Description
Nebula NGC 3603. Colored infrared image of the huge starbirth nebula NGC 3603. This is the largest emission nebula in our galaxy, the Milky Way. It contains a cluster of massive stars (center), some of which are over 100 times heavier than the Sun. The radiation from these powerful stars ionizes hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to glow. The stars were formed from the coalescence of the gas in the nebula. They are thought to be only around 1 or 2 million years old, very young in stellar terms. NGC 3603 lies over 20,000 light years from Earth.
