Nerve fiber. A nerve is made up of bundles of axons, which are grouped together and encased in protective tissue. Each nerve is made up of afferent fibers and/ or efferent fibers. Afferent fibers carry information from the outside of the body the brain. Efferent fibers carry information from the brain to body tissues, muscles, glands, and blood vessels.
