Description
Synaptic junctions. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) showing the junction sites also known as synapses between nerve fibers and a nerve cell grown in culture. Two nerve fibers colored purple run diagonally. At top is the surface of a nerve cell (yellow) to which the nerve fibers have formed synapses. Impulses travel down these fibers into the nerve cell, typical of dendrites. The fibers branch before forming their junctions which appear as terminal swellings (top left). Across these swellings neuro-transmitter chemicals pass into the cell in response to nerve fiber impulses and in this way the cell is stimulated. Magnification x10,000 at 6x6cm size.
