Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the suction cups on a net-winged midge larva (Blephariceridae), a family of Diptera belonging to Nematocera. Their larvae are well adapted to life in strong currents the body is very flat and wide; on the underside of the body are six consecutive suckers, with which the larvae hold themselves in very strong flow by a vacuum formation on the stones. The adhesion is increased by microhairs on the edge of the suction cup and on the "claws" (shown here). Magnification is 170x at 12x12cm image size.
