Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the club-shaped hairs on the back of the larva of the net-winged midge (Blephariceridae), a family of Diptera belonging to Nematocera. Their larvae are well adapted to life in strong currents the body is very flat and wide; on the underside of the body are six consecutive suckers, with which the larvae hold themselves in very strong flow by a vacuum formation on the stones. The larvae graze on the growth on stones, especially diatoms. Magnification is 250x at 12x12cm image size.
