Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a net-winged midge (Blephariceridae) larva mouth. Their larvae are well adapted to life in strong currents the body is very flat and wide; on the underside of the body are six consecutive suckers, with which the larvae hold themselves in very strong flow by a vacuum formation on the stones. The larvae graze on the growth on stones, especially diatoms. Here, the mouth area is seen from above. Magnification is 130x at 12x12cm image size.
