Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the suction cups on a net-winged midge larva (Blephariceridae), a family of Diptera belonging to Nematocera. Their larvae are well adapted to life in strong currents the body is very flat and wide; on the underside of the body are six consecutive suckers (dark gray, here a detail of the stomach side with a leg and suction cup), with which the larvae hold themselves in very strong currents by suctioning onto the stones. The larvae graze with their pines (above the first sucker, yellowish) on the growth on stones, especially diatoms. Magnification is 80x at 12x12cm image size.
