Description
Light micrograph of a section through an ovule of the stinging nettle, Urtica dioica. At upper center right is the developing ovule (female gamete, purple) visible within the hollow chamber of the flower ovary; the ovule itself is housed inside a protective and nutritive embryo sac (brown). The ovule is attached to placental tissue (at center) of the ovary wall; it is an "orthotropous" ovule because it is attached by a stalk in an upright position (although it appears to lie on its side). After fertilization the ovule forms a seed of the nettle flower. Magnification unknown.
