Artist's Description

Flatiron Building with recruiting signage for WWI "Your Country Needs You." After the sinking of seven US merchant ships by submarines and the publication of the Zimmermann telegram, Wilson called for war on Germany, which the US Congress declared on April 6, 1917. The United States had a small army, but, after the passage of the Selective Service Act, it drafted 2.8 million men, and, by summer 1918, was sending 10,000 fresh soldiers to France every day. The Flatiron Building, originally the Fuller Building, is a triangular 22 story steel-framed landmarked building located at 175 Fifth Avenue and is considered to be a groundbreaking skyscraper. The building sits on a triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and East 22nd Street, with 23rd Street grazing the triangle's northern (uptown) peak. The building, which has been called "one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers and a quintessential symbol of New York City".
