Leaders of the Manhattan Project; J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi and Ernest Lawrence. Photo was taken in 1940 at the University of California at Berkeley, where Oppenheimer was professor of theoretical physics and Lawrence was professor of experimental physics and director of the Radiation Laboratory. Julius Robert Oppenheimer (April 22, 1904 - February 18, 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Along with Enrico Fermi, he is often called the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II project that developed the first nuclear weapons. Enrico Fermi (September 29, 1901 - November 28, 1954) was an an Italian-born, naturalized American physicist particularly known for his work on the development of the first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1, and for his contributions to the development of quantum theory, nuclear and particle physics, and statistical mechanics.
