Description
Osteoporosis. Enhanced colored X-ray of the pelvis of a woman aged 72, showing decreased bone density in osteoporosis. At top center are the lumbar vertebra which join the pelvis; the thigh bones (femurs) are at lower left and right. Color coding shows the variation in bone mineral density from gray (least dense) to green (most dense). The shape of the pelvis also reveals decreased bulk which is typical of elderly post-menopausal women. Osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) primarily affects woman after the menopause due to effects of lowered ovarian hormone levels on bone replacement. The pelvis and thigh-bones are most affected, with a greater risk of bone fractures.
