Artist's Description

Entitled "Paquin dress illustration by George Barbier, 1912." Jeanne Paquin (1869 - 1936) was a leading French fashion designer, known for her resolutely modern and innovative designs. She trained as a dressmaker at Rouff and later opened her own fashion house in 1891. The Maison Paquin quickly became known for its 18th century inspired pastel evening dresses and tailored day dresses, as well as for its numerous publicity stunts, including organizing fashion parades to promote her new models and sending her models to operas and races in order to show off her designs. George Barbier (October 10, 1882 - March 16, 1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. By 1911 he was at the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theater and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success.
