Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pine (large, green), chestnut (brown), and ash (red, porous) pollen grains. These pollens are airborne in April and May. The striking air sacks of the pine pollen aid in their dispersal by wind. The chestnut pollen grains have a prickly surface with which they adhere to insects to be carried from flower to flower. Pollen carries the male genetic material of the tree. Pollen grains also trigger allergies in people. Magnification 520x.
