Description
The Pitcher Plant(Sarracenia purpurea) is a carnivorous plant species that gets nitrogen compounds & proteins, which are absent from the poor soils they grow in, by trapping and digesting insects. The pitcher is an elaborate extension of the midrib of the leaf containing a sugary digestive liquid. The scent of nectar and the plant's bright colors (often red) attract insects which fall into the pitcher & drown. The inside of the pitcher is lined with downward pointing hairs which help to keep the insects from escaping. These plants were photographed on Cape Brenton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
