Description
Entitled "Police Department swears in Singer midgets, Louis Vasshek & Dora Vieg." Singer's Midgets were a popular vaudeville group in the first half of the 20th century. Leopold von Singer (May 3, 1877 - March 5, 1951) formed Singer's Midgets in 1912-13, and built the Liliputstadt, a "midget city" at the "Venice in Vienna" amusement park, where they performed. The Liliputstadt was a major success, Singer began to tour with his performers throughout Europe and, in the process, recruited new members. After WWI broke out, the troupe traveled to the United States, and remained there for the remainder of their existence where they performed in vaudeville theaters. During the 1930s, some of Singer's Midgets began appearing in films, most notably, The Terror of Tiny Town and The Wizard of Oz. The Singer Midgets disbanded in the mid-1940s, with many members returning home to their native Europe. Photographed by National Photo Company November 3, 1924.
