Description
Polarized light micrograph of a thin section of porphyritic granite containing large crystals of feldspar. Granite is an igneous rock composed of quartz, feldspar and mafic minerals (usually micas or hornblende). The term porphyritic refers to the texture of the rock. Porphyritic granites contain large crystals embedded in a fine-grained, compact matrix. Magnification is x80 at 35mm.
