Description
Color enhanced cross section MRI image of the brain of a patient who had previously sustained severe head injury as a result of a high speed motor vehicle accident. The areas of brain injury are colorized yellow. The serpigenous red areas along the periphery of the brain represent the cerebral cortex. The symmetrical areas of green towards the center of the image represent the basal ganglia (deep grey matter). During severe head injury the frontal lobes move because of acceleration-decceleration and become damaged as they literally bang against the frontal bones. Also some of the brain injury occurs as a result of tearing of the neuronal fibers called axons, which is called 'axonal injury or shearing injury'.
