Three-dimensional visualization reconstructed from scanned human data of maternal and fetal skeletal systems. Transparent body envelopes reveal the differences and similarities of the two systems. During embryonic and fetal development, cartilaginous bone models begin to ossify. At birth, the bones have ossified enough to support the body, but it will take at least a year for complex joint mechanisms to tie all of the bones together to deliver enough strength and flexibility to permit toddling. Some bones continue the ossification process well into adolescence.
