Description
Prehistoric surgical operation. The drawing, based on actual material and photographs of the region, represents a primitive blanket clad shaman using the cautery in the highlands of Peru. The use of cautery dates back to prehistoric times when hot stones were used to stop bleeding. Illustration appeared in "Paleopathology an introduction to the study of ancient evidences of disease" by Roy Lee Moodie, 1923. This image has been color-enhanced.
