SEM of the ciliate from the genus, Cyrtolophosis. Ciliates are commonly found in water and moist soil. They are protozoa, characterized by numerous, projecting hairs, called cilia. These cilia are their means of locomotion and their mechanism for feeding on prey, such as bacteria. They range in size from 50 um to 1 mm. Ciliates are often used by scientists to measure water quality. This ciliate came from a biologically clean location, and it is also capable of living in very heavily polluted waters..
