Description
False colour radio map of the active galaxy Cygnus A (3C 405) at a wavelength of 20 cm taken by the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico. Cygnus A is a typical radio galaxy with twin jets emanating from its nucleus and joining it to two extended radio- emitting lobes. The jets are thought to be collimated beams of plasma which form radio hot spots where they collide with the surrounding medium. This image shows a field of view 2x1 arcmin at a resolution of 1. 25 arcsec. Observers P. Scheuer, R. Laing & R. Perley. Taken Sept 83, A-configuration, 27 antennae, continuum. This picture may not be used to state or imply the endorsement by NRAO, AUI or NSF of any company or product.
