Artist's Description
Satirical illustration in the form of a rebus letter sent by the American Revolutionary politician Henry Laurens (1724-1792) to British politician Lord George Gordon. A rebus is a puzzle that combines the use of illustrated pictures with individual letters to depict words or phrases. In 1780, Laurens (1724-1792), a native of Charleston, South Carolina, was sent by the Continental Congress to the Netherlands as ambassador. En route to Amsterdam, he was captured by the British off the coast of Newfoundland and tried for treason. He became the first and only American ever imprisoned in the Tower of London, and was released later that year in exchange for Lord Cornwallis following the latter's surrender at Yorktown. Etching by an anonymous British illustrator, 1781.
