Rocky Mountain wood tick. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, seen from the front. This tick is a carrier of the Colorado tick fever virus. The tick's specialized mouthparts (lower center) are adapted to pierce the skin of its host. Its normally flattened body is seen here fully swollen after a meal. The tick is normally about 0.2 centimetres (cm) long, but grows to about 1.27 cm after a meal. Ticks are relatives of spiders and have eight legs. Colorado tick fever is characterized by headaches fever and body aches; it is rarely life-threatening. Magnification x11 at 5x7cm size. Magnification x17 at 4x5 inch size.
