Storm on Saturn. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the planet Saturn, showing a large storm system in its atmosphere. The storm is seen as a large, pale, arrowhead-shaped feature at center. The top of the storm cloud is made of ammonia ice crystals, formed as upwelling warm gas reached the upper reaches of the atmosphere. The arrowhead shape is due to the different wind velocities at different latitudes, and extends about 12,500 kilometers from east to west. Large storms like this appear to occur in a cycle of about 57 years (2 Saturn years), during summer in Saturn's northern hemisphere.
