Description
Caption Scabies mites. Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two scabies mites (or itch mites, Sarcoptes sp.). These are parasitic mites which cause scabies. They live in the skin of their host and cause intense itching and red pustules on the skin. The itching is due to allergic reactions to faeces and secretions from the mites. The females lay their eggs in tunnels bored in the skin, and the young are transmitted from host to host by contact. The condition can be treated with drugs and creams. Magnification x190 at 6x6cm size. x300 at 4x5"
