Description
During the 19th century American inventors sought patents on self-propelled road machines. This steam-driven mechanical contraption was conceived by Zadoc Dederick and Isaac Grass from Newark, New Jersey, who said, "the pivots, cranks and connecting rods will produce an alternately-stepping motion". They were awarded a patent in 1868.
