Artist's Description

A watercolor of the illegal Portuguese slave ship Diligenté showing four crew members with multiple slaves crowded on the weather deck. The ship was seized by H.M. Sloop Pearl in 1838 with 600 slaves on board and was taken in charge to Nassau. A lieutenant in the British Royal Navy, Henry Samuel Hawker, painted this scene from the ship.
