Description
Colored scanning electron micrograph of a slime mold (Lycogala sp.) spore. This type of slime mold is a plasmodial species. This spore has finished producing a haploid, single-celled, free-living myxamoeba. Pairs of these myxamoebae will swarm together and fuse to form one large, multinucleated cell called a plasmodium. The plasmodium moves slowly, feeding on fungi and bacteria until it begins to form spore producing fruiting bodies. Magnification is x6000 at 6x6cm.
