Description
The Carina Nebula is a large bright nebula that has within its boundaries several related open clusters of stars. This Chandra image is 22 separate pointings of the telescope that have been stitched together to look at the famous Carina Nebula like never before. In this image, low, medium, and high-energy X-rays are colored red, green, and blue respectively. Chandra detected over 14,000 stars in this region, revealed a diffuse X-ray glow, and provided strong evidence that massive stars have already self-destructed in this nearby supernova factory. The Carina Nebula is one of the best places in the Milky Way to study how young and massive stars live and die. Several pieces of evidence support the idea that supernova production has already begun in this star-forming region. The detection of six possible neutron stars, the dense cores often left behind after stars explode in supernovas, provides additional evidence that supernova activity is ramping up in Carina. The diffuse emission observed by Chandra also supports the idea that supernovas have already erupted in Carina. Release date May 24, 2011.
