Description
This view of snowcapped Mauna Loa Volcano is from the eastern lip of Kilauea caldera, at Kilauea Iki. Kilauea Volcano can be seen erupting steam from its new summit vent which opened in March 2008. Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. For decades it was thought to be a satellite of its giant sister volcano, Mauna Loa, but in fact is now believed to be a separate volcano with its own underground magma source.
