Artist's Description

Portrait of Sojourner Truth (c. 1797 - November 26, 1883) . Born Isabella Van Wagener, the daughter of slaves, in New York State in the 18th century. She escaped to Canada and freedom in 1827, only a year before the state abolished slavery, then moved to New York City in 1829. She acquired a reputation as a spiritualist, and in 1843 renamed herself Sojourner Truth. For the next 40 years she would be a popular and effective speaker for the abolitionist cause and for women's rights. In 1864 she visited with Abraham Lincoln at the White House.
