Captioned "Sanctae Inquisitionis Hispanicae artes aliquot detectae, ac palam traductae. A discovery and declaration of sundry subtle practices of the Holy Inquisition of Spain. Certain special examples set apart by themselves wherein a man may see the forsaid practices of the Inquisition, as they be practiced and exercised, very lively described. Set forth in Latin, by Reginaldus Gonsaluius Montanus, and lately translated. 1569." The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and to replace the Medieval Inquisition, which was under Papal control. The Spanish Inquisition is often cited in literature and history as an example of Catholic intolerance and repression.
