Description
Eyespot of moth. Macrophotograph of the wing of the Spanish moon moth Graellsia isabellae, showing an eyespot. Small overlapping scales produce the coloration and patterning of the wings. Here, a rounded eyespot colored red, yellow and white is seen, occurring on each forewing. The eyespot is a mimicry device. It resembles the eye of a larger animal, and it serves to startle predators when the wings are suddenly flashed open. The eyespot is otherwise hidden when the wings are held vertical. The Spanish moon moth is a rare and protected species of moth, living in pine forests in parts of Spain and the French Alps.
