Artist's Description
Transmission electron micrograph of the midpiece of spermatozoa from the dormouse (Glis glis), in longitudinal section. Elongate mitochondria are arranged end-to-end in a helix, forming a sheath around the axoneme. The intimate relationship between the mitochondria and the outer dense fibers and axoneme of the sperm tail facilitates the diffusion of ATP.
